Back to: Automate with AI: No-Code Workflows & Agents
Decide whether a process should be automated, AI-assisted, simplified, or left human.
The idea
Automation repeats a process quickly—including its flaws. Before choosing a tool, confirm that the task is frequent, stable, observable, and based on inputs you are permitted to process. If people disagree about the desired outcome, automation will encode confusion.
Choose among four modes: eliminate work that adds no value; simplify unnecessary steps; assist a person with drafts or classifications; or automate a stable action end to end. AI assistance is often the safest first stage because a person can inspect output while the process is learned.
Use the cost of a wrong action as a boundary. High-impact decisions, irreversible actions, sensitive data, and rare exceptions demand stronger oversight—or no automation.
Try it now
- List five recurring processes and estimate volume, stability, reviewability, and error cost.
- For each, choose eliminate, simplify, assist, or automate—and state why.
- Select one low-risk process with at least ten similar examples.
- Define success, unacceptable failure, and the person who owns the process.
- Run the current manual process once and note every judgment or exception.

Quality check
- The process is understood before a tool is selected.
- The chosen mode matches error cost and reversibility.
- A named person owns outcomes and exceptions.
- The current baseline and stop condition are recorded.
You have selected one appropriate AI-assisted workflow and rejected or deferred unsuitable candidates.
